Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md. Tajul Islam has instructed the concerned to bring the dengue situation to a tolerable level by eradicating the Aedes mosquito within the next two weeks.

He made the remarks while addressing an exchange meeting on 'Strengthening Dengue Prevention and Aedes Mosquito Control' at the Mayor Hanif Auditorium of Nagar Bhaban of Dhaka South City Corporation on Sunday afternoon.

Md. Tajul Islam said all concerned including the ministry and the city corporation is working relentlessly to keep the people of the capital mosquito-free. Ongoing activities need to be accelerated. We need to work towards the goal of reaching a tolerable level of Aedes mosquito control within the next two weeks.

He added that combing operations are being conducted in Dhaka to bring Aedes mosquitoes under control. People are not becoming aware even after repeated awareness. The job of the government is to make people aware and the government is constantly doing that job.

The minister said the lives of millions of people could not be too much for one or two people. Suffering for all a few will not be accepted at all. For this reason, legal action is being taken against those who find Aedes mosquito larvae in their homes or buildings. Many have already been jailed and fined.

Responding to a question from reporters, the local government minister said many dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals and are hiding their real addresses. This is causing some problems in killing Aedes mosquitoes. Because special operations are being conducted where patients are being found. The matter has been discussed with the Ministry of Health.

He said the local government department, city corporation as well as health department were taking steps in this regard.

Helaluddin Ahmed, Senior Secretary, Local Government Department was present as the special guest at the meeting chaired by Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.

The meeting was also attended by councilors and senior officials of the Ministry of Local Government and City Corporation.
