The speculation about the Barcelona coach has finally come to an end. The president of the Catalan club, Joan Laporta, said that Ronald Koeman will remain as the coach for the Camp Nou next season.
“We’ve decided to give continuity to a contract already in place,” Laporta confirmed after a meeting of the club’s directors.
Koeman’s confirmation comes after the Catalan press had hinted that winning round Lionel Messi as well as lifting the Copa del Rey and overseeing a year of transition may not have been enough for him to keep his job.
Josep Maria Bartomeu, then club president, appointed Koeman at the start of the season after Barcelona had their first titleless season in a decade. Although they won the Copa del Rey title this year but did not do well in the other two leagues. After exiting the last 16 of the Champions League, the Catalan team was somehow placed third in La Liga.
However, the end of La Liga was a great disappointment for the club. At the end of the season, Ronald Koeman feared losing his job due to the team’s poor performance. Spanish media outlets reported the possibility of ending his term.
Joan Laporta said last month that a cycle had ended in Barcelona. He did not publicly support the coach at the time and said the club needed more time to “analyze” the team’s performance during the season.
Later, Laporta also had a meeting with Koeman. However, there is no clear message about the future of the coach, but the possibility of him leaving is discussed there.
Koeman remains in the Camp Nou dugout after a “unanimous” vote despite Barca’s last 16 Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain and a disappointing end to the Liga title race.
