BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been taken to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Monday for treatment.

A black jeep carrying the BNP Chairperson left Nazimuddin Road’s Old Dhaka Central Jail around 12:20 pm and arrived at the hospital at 12:36 pm.

Later, she was taken to the cabin block in a wheelchair where she will be kept in room 621 and 622.

Her escort comprised of at least 15 vehicles of elite force Rapid Action Battalion. Besides, security measures have been beefed up surrounding the hospital in Dhaka's Shahbagh.

Earlier on the day, Mahbubul Islam, a jailer of Dhaka Central Jail on Nazimuddin Road, said that preparations are underway to take Khaleda Zia to BSMMU as the BNP chief agreed to accept treatment at the hospital.

Khaleda Zia has been in jail since February 8 last year when a special court awarded her five years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

She had refused on multiple occasions to accept treatment at BSMMU and asked for a hospital of her choice in Gulshan.
