The bridge built by LGED on the canal adjacent to Abdus Chomed Secondary School on the road of Munshirabad-Aurabuniya Road in Jhalokati’s Kathalia Upazila has been in a critical condition for five years. Due to the cement collapse on the bridge, now it has become a death trap.
Thousands of people, including hundreds of school going children, are being victimized due to accidents while traveling through the bridge every day. Although the concerned authorities are aware of the matter, they don’t renovate the bridge.
As the local public representatives did not pay attention after the bridge’s plank collapsed, a local man named Rahmat Ali purchased the timber and repaired the bridge temporarily a year ago. Victims of the villagers have urged the authorities to speedily intervene for the reform of the bridge.
Although the people of the village now that the bridge is the death trap, they are crossing the bridge as there are no alternative routes. Due to the breaking down of the bridge, motorbikes were also stopped as the cement made of plank is collapsed.
Children are often victims of accidents while traveling through the bridge. Now the situation of the bridge is very critical. Pedestrians can be victims of major accidents at any time after breaking. Parents of the students are always in constant fear due to the danger of crossing the bridge.
Local guardians alleged that they have to be concerned about sending children to school every day.
Kathalia Upazila Assistant Engineer Bipul Kumar Adhikari said, “I have joined in the Kathalia two months ago. I was not aware of such a critical position of the bridge. I will visit the bridge and take the necessary steps.”
