The Kanai-Balai Dighi

The traditional Kanai-Balai Dighi is located in Kachipara UP No. 1 of Baufal upazila of Patuakhali. It is learned that the lake was dug hundreds of years ago to provide safe drinking water to the people of the area.

The approximate length of the lake is about 200 meters and the width is 140 meters. This Kanai-Balai Dighi is on the verge of extinction due to a lack of reforms.

It is said that more than a hundred years ago, there were two brothers named Kanai and Balai in Kachipara village. One day while bathing in this lake, a big Gajar fish (Channa marulius) took Kanai and Balai deep into the lake.  After that, the two brothers never found. Since then, the lake has been known as Kanai-Balai Dighi.

Local people believe there are many mysterious things around the lake. Many things there is no depth of the lake; even many believed that the lake has a history of the mystery of the golden pot.

Kajal Rani Das, a female visitor, said, “This Kanai-Balai Dighi is a place of pilgrimage for us. We come here every year on the Pahela Baishakh (first day of Bengali month).”

“We heard many stories about Kanai-Balai Dighi from my father and uncles,” said Masud Gazi, a local resident of the Kachipara UP. “A woman from Madhabpura village of the upazila came to check whether the Kanai-Balai Dighi is true or false. She dives to see what is under the water, however, her body was floated four days later.”

Thousands of people from home and abroad and people of this area have been enjoying the benefits of this lake for ages. Everyday people from far and wide come to Kanai-Balai Dighi. Due to the coronavirus, the number of visitors to Kanai-Balai Dighi is less than before.

Patuakhali District Council Chairman Khalilur Rahman Mohan Mia said, “I visited Kanai-Balai Dighi a few days ago. I have provided financial assistance from the district council. I even built a small brick-built house alongside the lake so that the women can take a bath and change their attires. In the future, all kinds of assistance will be provided by the district council for the development of Kanai-Balai Dighi.”

It has been seen on the spot that the Kanai-Balai Dighi is in a dilapidated condition today. The lake is on the verge of extinction due to a lack of reforms. Some financial assistance has been provided by the government for the renovation of the lake.
