Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi said jute mills will be modernized as per the demand of domestic and international markets by terminating workers through the golden handshake process due to increasing losses of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC).

He said this at a briefing on BJMC's activities review on Sunday.

Textile and Jute Secretary Lokman Hossain Mia and Additional Secretary Mohammad Abul Kalam were present on the occasion.

The Minister said that since 2014, all the arrears payment of retired workers (8,954) and current workers (24,886), PF deposit, gratuity, and retirement facility at the maximum rate of 27% of gratuity. For this, about 5 thousand crore taka will be provided from the government budget.

He said the jute mills will be run under PPP/joint venture/G2G/lease model under government control. In the new model, the current workers who have been decommissioned will get job opportunities on a priority basis. At the same time, these will create new jobs.
