Jagannath University’s (JnU) suspended student Tithi Sarkar
A court on Saturday has ordered to send the Jagannath University’s (JnU) suspended student Tithi Sarkar, who was arrested on charges for insulting religion, to jail after remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahidul Islam issued the order after hearing.
Earlier, the investigating officer requested to keep Tithi in jail till the investigation of the case is completed. Following the appeal, the judge ordered her sent to jail.
Last Thursday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ziaur Rahman granted a one-day remand to the Tithi Sarkar for questioning. Besides, the court also ordered to send Tithi’s husband Shiplu to jail.
Tithi Sarkar was arrested on Wednesday (November 11) at 3:45 pm from the house of a distant relative of her husband at Panchdona in Madhabadi, Narsingdi. Tithi’s husband Shiplu Mallick was arrested from the Kaptanbazar area in the capital at 11:45 pm on that day.
It is to be noted that Tithi Sarkar had been making negative comments about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on Facebook and through various social media for a long time.
Later, all the student organizations and general students of Jagannath University staged a human chain and protest demanding the expulsion of the Tithi Sarkar for insulting religion
In the face of the student movement, the university administration suspended Tithi Sarkar on October 23.
