Six people, including a police officer, were killed in a series of “furious” gun battles in Jersey City, a state of New Jersey in the United States. Among the killed, there were two suspected gunmen.

The firing started at two places on Tuesday afternoon at local time. First, the gun battle with the police was started from the cemetery which later stopped at the supermarket. Five bodies were found there.

The identity of the police officer who died as Joseph Seals, 39, a very dedicated police officer and often raided “in removing guns from the street”, according to Jersey City Police Chief Mike Kelly.

Meanwhile, two other police officers were also wounded during the incident. Several local schools and businesses were also put on lockdown.

Speaking to reporters, Chief Mike Kelly said two injured police officers were released from the hospital. The incident is being investigated. “However, we believe this is not a terrorist attack.”

Dozens of armed law enforcement officials, including Swat teams and federal agents, were deployed to the scene. The suspects were armed with “high powered rifles” and fired “hundreds of rounds of ammunition” during the gun battle, said police.

At least one survivor from the business is being treated for injuries and the van used by the suspects is being investigated by bomb disposal specialists.
