Jaflong landslide death toll reaches 5

The death toll from landslide while extracting stones from a quarry in Jaflong area of Gowainghat upazila in Sylhet rose to five as another succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night.

The deceased was identified as Sadek Miah, 40, son of Taj Ullah, a resident of Baniachang upazila of Habiganj.

Local people and police said, a group of workers were extracting stones illegally by digging a deep hole at a quarry, owned by Abdus Sattar, at Mandirer Zum area. Suddenly, a portion of mud collapsed on them around 4:30 pm while they were extracting stones from the quarry.

Following the incident, local people rushed to the spot and rescued five with injuries while found four dead.

The identity of the four deceased are - Nur Mia, 50, son of Mafiz Ullah of Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj, Jahur Ali, 65, a resident of Baniachang upazila of Habiganj, his son Mojaheed, 22 and his daughter Shakirun, 26 - died on the spot while three others, including Sadek Miah, suffered injuries, he said.

Later, Sadek succumbed to his injuries on way to his home in Habiganj.

Four bodies, excluding Sadek, were sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
