Jahangirnagar University students on Tuesday blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway protesting the incident of beating up a fellow student by Ansar members at the national monument on Monday evening.

The protesters staged a human chain in front of the main gate of the university at about 11:30am and later took position on the highway, triggering long tailbacks on both sides of the highway for about half an hour.

They were also chanting slogans demanding the expulsion of the alleged Ansar members who beat up a fourth-year zoology department student Nur Hossain for protesting against ‘illegal’ visitor’s entry on the national memorial.

The protesters placed a four-point charter of demands including expulsion of accused Ansar members and bringing them to book, bearing the treatment costs of the victim, and taking steps regarding illegal visitor’s entry at the national monument.

The protesters later withdrew their position following the assurance of accommodating their demands by the officer-in-charge of Ashulia police station SM Kamruzzaman and University Acting Proctor ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan.

Ashulia Police Station OC SM Kamruzzaman said, "We came to the spot after receiving the news of the blockade. We have heard the demands of the students and learned that senior officials have taken action against the guilty Ansar members. We will take further legal action in response to the complaint of the injured student."

Dhaka District Ansar Commandant Afzal Hossain said, "I am shocked by yesterday's untoward incident." The accused have been permanently expelled from the Ansar and blacklisted. We will bear all the expenses of the treatment of the injured student.

Acting Proctor of the university ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan said, "We are investigating the injured student. If the incident is reported to the police station, the university administration will provide full legal assistance."

Earlier on Monday afternoon, the victim Nur Hossain and his two nieces went to visit the National Memorial. The responsible Ansar members were allowing many to visit the National Memorial site-many at expense of money. When Nur protested the incident, Ansar members locked him in a room. Later, seven or eight Ansar members severely hit Nur on the lips, throat, and lower abdomen. They even hit the victims' heads. Nur was seriously injured. He was later rescued by the police and admitted to the hospital. Nur is currently undergoing treatment at Enam Medical College in Savar.
