Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury called on journalists to be motivated by responsible journalism in the public interest.

She made the call while addressing the 'Bangabandhu-DRU Best Reporting Award-2020' at the Silver Jubilee of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Friday.

“The media is an integral part of our lives,” she said. Information published in the media plays an important role in shaping public opinion and decision making.

She added that Bangladesh is now going through a golden age of information flow. The availability of ICT has increased the scope of information flow. Objective news published in the media can strengthen democracy. Now women are taking up journalism as a challenging profession - which is playing a positive role in changing social attitudes and empowering women, she said.

The speaker said that the media is considered the fourth pillar of the state. Strong media is the driving force behind the proper management of the state apparatus. She also called upon the media to work to inspire the people in the spirit of the liberation war.

Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury extends her heartfelt greetings and congratulations to all the members associated with the organization at this memorable moment of DRU's Silver Jubilee celebrations and wishes them success in their endeavors.

Later, the Speaker handed over ‘Bangabandhu-DRU Best Reporting
Award’ to 15 journalists.

Awami League Central Working Committee member Anwar Hossain, Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam and State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury spoke as special guests.

DRU president Rafiqul Islam Azad presided over the function, which was attended by the chairman of the jury board and other members, journalists, and eminent personalities.
