The International Day of Older Persons is being observed in the country today like elsewhere in the globe with the theme “Digital Equity for All Ages”.
The International Day of Older Persons has been observed across the world since 1991 aiming to create public awareness about old age along with ensuring security and rights for the senior citizens.
On December, 14 in 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons (resolution 45/106).
This was preceded by initiatives such as the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing, which was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing and endorsed later that year by the UN General Assembly.
Mohammad Zakir Hossain, information and public relations officer at the Ministry of Social Welfare, said on Thursday that the day will be observed in a casual manner considering the current situation in the COVID pandemic.
Special supplements are being published in daily newspapers on the occasion of the day. Special posters and leaflets have been printed to create awareness about the elders.
Besides, a discussion meeting will be organized by the Ministry of Social Welfare to highlight the importance and significance of the day.
