The practice of internal democracy is needed to institutionalize democracy, which no other party except the Awami League has, Awami League General Secretary and Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said today.
He said this after paying homage at the tombs of three national leaders at Doel Chattar in the capital on Saturday morning on the occasion of the 57th death anniversary of Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy.
“Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy has fought for democracy all his life. He wanted to institutionalize democracy. Although democracy is now unchained, it has not yet been institutionalized due to the mischief of an evil force. On the day of the death anniversary of Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy, our pledge will be to institutionalize democracy,” Obaidul Quader said.
Even though a quarter spoke of democracy, they never seemed to believe in democracy. Even if they talk about democracy, they are actually enemies of democracy, said Awami League General Secretary.
Addressing the BNP, he said, “Those who do not have democracy in their homes will establish democracy in the country – It cannot be expected.”
Responding to criticism over the construction of the sculpture of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Awami League General Secretary said the Prime Minister is handling everything. “We should not heat our heads in a hurry. Prime Minister will deal with everything with courage in the same way she has dealt with the COVID situation,” he added.
Obaidul Quader said, “There are sculptures in different countries of the world. There are also sculptures in Muslim countries. If the sculpture construction is not anti-Islamic there, why in our country?” he questioned.
Awami League Organizing Secretary SM Kamal Hossain, Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, Office Secretary Biplob Barua, Agriculture and Cooperatives Secretary Faridunnahar Laili and others were present on the occasion.
