Indian-origin South African HIV researcher dies from coronavirus

Prominent Indian-origin virologist and HIV researcher Gita Ramjee have died of deadly coronavirus infection in South Africa. She was 64.

She died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in South Africa on Tuesday. She was suffering from COVID-19 virus complications. Gita Ramjee was the Clinical Trials Unit Principal Investigator and Unit Director of the HIV Prevention Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) offices in Durban. She also served as director of the HIV Prevention Research Unit.

Confirming the information, SAMRC CEO Glenda Gray said, "I am very sorry to report that Professor Geeta Ramji passed away on Tuesday." He returned from London seven days ago. However, no symptoms were seen in his body.

In 2018, Ramjee was presented with the Outstanding Female Scientist Award in Lisbon by the European Development Clinical Trials Partnerships (EDCTP) for her lifetime commitment to finding new HIV prevention methods, which are conducive to the lifestyles, circumstances and perceived risk factors that South African women are faced with.

Five South Africans have died from COVID-19 since Sunday, the third day of the lockdown. Over 1350 cases have been reported in the country so far.
