The Indian women's hockey team scripted history on Monday by qualifying for the Olympic Games semifinals for the first time, beating three-time champions Australia by a solitary goal.

Just a day earlier, Indian men's team qualified for semifinals by defeating the United Kingdom 3-1 in the quarter-finals, ending a long 49-year wait. The Indian hockey team last qualified for the last four back to 1972 Munich Olympics. They lost in the semis by 2-0 to arch-rivals Pakistan.

But this time, besides the men, the Indian women's hockey team as the No. 9 team in the world rankings has also proved its worth through a great performance.

But nothing was in India's favor against world number two Australia. Drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur rose to the occasion when it mattered and converted India's lone penalty corner in the 22nd minute to surprise the Australians.

Earlier, India's best performance in the Olympics came way back in the 1980 Moscow Games where they finished fourth out of six teams.

The Rani Rampal-led side will take on Argentina in the semifinal on Wednesday.
