Husband gets life for burning wife to death

A court in Dhaka today has sentenced husband Islam Srishti to life imprisonment in a case filed for burning his first wife to death at Bihari Palli in the capital’s Mohammadpur. At the same time, he was fined Tk 20000 and given another six months imprisonment for non-payment.
Dhaka’s Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Maksuda Parvin handed over the verdict on Thursday.
The other three accused in the case – Srishti’s mother Badrunnessa, second wife and sister Baby were acquitted in the verdict.
According to the case, Farzana, his first wife, was burned to death on February 20, 2005. She was married to Islam Srishti two and a half years ago.
Farzana’s father Reza filed a case with the Mohammadpur police station. On June 28, 2005, the then SI of Mohammadpur police station Shihab Uddin filed the chargesheet.
The case was first heard at the Women and Child Abuse Repression Tribunal. Later, the case was transferred to the concerned court.
The trial of the accused began on April 2, 2014, with the formation of charges under Section 302 of the Penal Code. During the trial of the case, the court took the testimony of 12 people. The court fixed the date of the verdict on February 15 after presenting the arguments of the state and the accused.
