Hundreds of villages swamped for Yaas effect

Due to the effect of cyclone Yaas, water has flowed in the rivers of Pirojpur above the danger level of 10 cm, as a result, about 100 villages have been inundated by the tidal waters of Kacha, Sandhya, Baleshwar and Kaliganga rivers in the district.
Houses, shops in Majher Char of Mathbaria upazila and Indurkani upazila were flooded by the tidal water through the broken part of the embankment. Many have taken refuge in nearby shelters as the water level has risen above normal.
About 3 km of the 8 km embankment in Togra village and Majher Char village of the district broke on Wednesday. About 550 families are suffering from this.
The victims alleged the dam was built two years ago, however, damaged by cyclone Amphan last year. The houses were flooded in tidal water. Due to the dam collapse, it is difficult to travel to the houses on the banks of the Kacha River.
According to the Water Development Board (BWDB), there is 293 km of embankments in the district. Of these, 94 km is in Indurkani upazila and 140 km in Mathbaria upazila.
Pirojpur District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md. Mozaharul Haque said 712 shelters have been set up in six upazilas of the district to deal with the cyclone. Tk 1.32 crore has been allocated for the formation of 67 medical teams and food aid in the district during disasters, he added.
