Protests erupted Donald Trump provoked his supporters to march the Capitol building
Outgoing United States President Donald Trump has provoked his supporters, alleging of vote-rigging, to march on the Capitol building. They later breached the building while Congress was certifying Joe Biden’s victory.
Protesters made it all the way to the Senate floor and the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Hundreds of Trump supporters stormed and vandalized the Capitol building. A woman was shot dead after the clash began with the law enforcers. Earlier, supporters of President Donald Trump blocked the Capitol building and breached the Congress session by violating the security line
The Capitol Building is considered a symbol of American democracy - which Trump supporters took over. Congress was forced to adjourn the session.
As the situation worsened, police escorted lawmakers to safety. The joint session was chaired by Vice President Mike Pence. He was also escorted out of the session room by the police.
The Capitol then launched a campaign to disperse Trump supporters. It takes more than three hours to bring the situation under control. An unprecedented scene of chaos and vandalism ensued as Trump supporters scurried through the hallways and searched various offices.
Thousands of Trump supporters, including members of various extremist groups, gathered in the capital, Washington, D.C., on Wednesday to oppose the congressional hearing. Speaking at the rally, Trump announced that he “would not accept defeat” in the November election.
Hundreds of Trump supporters broke through the security barricades at the Capitol building shortly after the rally and clashed with police. At one stage, they broke through the police barricade and entered the Capitol building during the Congress session.
Police used tear gas and paper spray to disperse them.
