As the situation worsened, police escorted lawmakers to safety. The joint session was chaired by Vice President Mike Pence. He was also escorted out of the session room by the police.

The Capitol then launched a campaign to disperse Trump supporters. It takes more than three hours to bring the situation under control. An unprecedented scene of chaos and vandalism ensued as Trump supporters scurried through the hallways and searched various offices.

Thousands of Trump supporters, including members of various extremist groups, gathered in the capital, Washington, D.C., on Wednesday to oppose the congressional hearing. Speaking at the rally, Trump announced that he “would not accept defeat” in the November election.
