The sand lifting is going on in Muradnagar under illegal dredger in Cumilla. And due to this, Upazila’s agricultural land is going to be disappeared. As a result, anger is increasing among people of the Upazila.

Nearly 100 dredgers of 22 Upazilas of the district are continuously lifting the sand from agricultural and government canal-bills. After repeated complaints, the administration did not respond to the issue.

It is learned that sand lifting is going on in the villages of Dhanpatikhala, Kalaraiya, Dighirpar, Bangra East UP’s farm village, Bishnupur, Ramchandrapur North UP’s Brahman Chapitola, Jatrapur UP’s Mochagora, Jatrapur, Raghurampur, Bhabanipur, Tonki UP’s Tonki, Baira, Chapitola UP’s Srirampur, Chapitola , Pushkonir Par, Srikail UP’s Rowachala and Sonakanda.

Some of the affected farmers said that due to sand lifting, they were disappeared in the dredging holes due to soil degradation by placing dredgers with 4 bighas of land in Shawkat Kalairiya Mauza of farm village. At present, dredging in agricultural land is going on in Dhanpatikhala village.

If no one wishes to give up the lands, they are forced to leave the land at a very low cost. Owners of the surrounding land are not receiving any results even though they are complaining more often in the Land Office including the local UP chairman. Most of the villagers cannot complain due to panic from local influential leader Shaikat. Even, the UP chairman Ruhul Amin is facing panic and anxiety while protesting illegal sand lifting.

Muradnagar Upazila Agriculture Officer Al Mamun Rasel said, “The illegal dredger is going on in almost all UP Upazilas. Often farmers complain that their agricultural lands are being taken due to dredging.”

“Due to a class of dishonest dredger traders, agricultural land in the Upazila faces severe damage. I have no legal authority to take action against them. It is possible to solve the matter through UNO, Assistant Land Commissioner, and Public Representatives,” he added.

UNO Mitu Mariam said, “Some dredgers have been closed on the basis of the allegations of farmers. Some dredger owners have been punished. Law enforcement will be taken against those dredger owners who are currently in the field.”
