Hog plum farmers are unhappy despite the bumper yield at Kaukhali in Pirojpur as they did not get a fair price. Last year, hog plum was sold at Tk 900 to Tk 1,000 per mound. This time it is being sold for Tk 700 to Tk 800 per mound.

Kaukhali farmer Zahirul Islam said hog plum yield has been quite good this year. But the price is not the same as the previous year. So the farmers have to face losses. And here we have traders who collect hog plum from the farmers and sell them at Mokam (storehouse). They sell one bag of hog plum for Tk 1100 to Tk 1200. This hog plum is sold at Mokam for Tk 1600 to Tk 1800.

Jahangir Hossain, a businessman from Kaukhali, said it costs Tk 210 to Tk 215 to reach Dhaka or Munshiganj from a warehouse. Then 10 percent of the sale price has to be paid to the storekeepers. Each bag (90 kg) of hog plum is loaded. At present, the price of a sack of hog plum in Kaukhali is Tk 1600 to Tk 1800. Which is sold in Dhaka for Tk 2200 to Tk 2400.

He added that the demand for hog plum is less this year as schools and colleges are closed due to coronavirus. So there is no previous demand for hog plum this year despite the bumper yield. So the traders are not getting the fair price.

Kaukhali Upazila Agriculture Upazila Officer Ali Azim Sharif said the agriculture department has provided all the necessary advice to the farmers. As a result, the farmers have got good yield this year.

He added that the yield has also been good this year as there was no insect attack on hog plum trees in Kaukhali.
