High level committee formed to monitor rape cases

A three-member high-level committee has been formed to monitor the implementation of the High Court's directive to dispose of rape cases without interruption within 180 working days.
The committee is headed by the Registrar General of the Supreme Court Md. Ali Akbar. The rest members of the committee are Additional Secretary of the Public Security Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs Md. Jahangir Alam or his representative (not below the rank of Additional Secretary) and the Secretary of the Ministry of Law or his representative (not below the rank of Additional Secretary).
The High Court bench of Justice Md. Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim on Wednesday constituted the committee.
In the last five years, 26,695 rape cases have been filed in police stations across the country. Of those, 4,331 cases have been filed in 2016, 4,683 in 2017, 4,695 in 2018, 6,766 in 2019 and 6,220 till October 2020.
The report signed by Additional DIG Md. Rezaul Karim was submitted by Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Md. Russell Chowdhury and Assistant Attorney General MMG Sarwar Payal. Advocate Yadia Zaman and Advocate Shahinuzzaman Shaheen were in favor of the writ petition.
Advocate Shahinuzzaman Shahin said the court has fixed March 23 for the next hearing of the case.
