A court in Dhaka today has granted a 5-day remand to Mufti Sharafat Hossain, joint general secretary of Hefazat-e-Islam’s central committee and general secretary of Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis, in a case filed in connection with the 2013 Hefazat violence.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Baki Billah passed the order after a court hearing on Thursday.
On the day, police produced accused Sharafat Hossain before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court. At that time, the investigating officer of the case appealed to remand him for 10 days for proper investigation in the case filed with Paltan Police Station in 2013. After the hearing, the court granted him a remand for five days.
Earlier, he was arrested from the Gulshan area in the capital around 5:00 pm on Wednesday.
Recently, Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh carried out violent and destructive activities at various places including Baitul Mukarram Mosque, Paltan and Jatrabari. Later, several cases were filed with different police stations in the capital. Various government intelligence agencies, including the police, are investigating the case.
As part of the investigation, eyewitnesses of the incident, information provided by the detainees, as well as video footage of the incident are being reviewed to identify those involved. Police are arresting the suspects soon after it was confirmed.
