Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij tested Covid-19 positive Saturday, more than 15 days after he was administered a trial dose of Bharat Biotech's Covid-19 vaccine candidate Covaxin.
Anil had volunteered to participate in the Phase 3 trials of India's first indigenous Covid-19 vaccine candidate Covaxin.
The 67-year-old minister took to Twitter to share the news, reports NDTV. He is the first politician in India to participate in the Covid-19 vaccine trials.
On 20 November, the BJP leader was administered the vaccine at the Civil Hospital in Ambala and said he was "fit and fine" after receiving the dose.
"I have been tested Corona positive. All those who have come in close contact with me are advised to get themselves tested for Corona," Anil tweeted on Saturday.
However, the Union Health Ministry said, "The antibodies against the infection build up in a human being only after a specific number of days pass after the second dose of the vaccine is taken, since this is a two-dose vaccine."
"The minister in question has taken only one dose of the vaccine."
Also, Bharat Biotech said the clinical trials of Covaxin are based on a two-dose schedule, given 28 days apart.
"The vaccine efficacy will be determined 14 days post the second dose. Covaxin has been designed to be efficacious when subjects receive both doses."
Covaxin has been evaluated in about 1,000 subjects in the first two phases of clinical trials, with promising safety and immunogenicity data, the Hyderabad-based drugmaker said.
"The Phase 3 trials are double-blinded and randomized, where 50% of participants in the trial receive the vaccine, and 50% of subjects receive placebo."
Meantime, Haryana has reported over 2.4 lakh Covid-19 cases so far, including 2,539 deaths. (UNB)
