Today is the birthday of Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara, the best left-handed batsman of the century. The wicketkeeper-batsman turns 43 today. Sangakkara is Sri Lanka’s glorious time in cricket.
He was a key pillar of the Sri Lankan batting order for a long time. He was a true ‘class batsman’ in all formats - T20s, Tests and ODIs.
Before retiring in 2015, 12,400 runs were added to his name in Test cricket with an average of 57.40! He has scored 38 centuries and 52 fifties in this format. He is the sixth-highest run-scorer in this format.
Sangakkara’s ODI career has also maintained his class. In this format, he scored 14,234 runs in 404 matches with an average of 42! He is the second-highest run-scorer in this format.
Not only in batting, but he was also respected as a wicketkeeper. His effortless wicketkeeping was as eye-catching as his batting. He tops the list of wicketkeepers with 482 dismissals in his ODI career. Despite not being a regular wicketkeeper in Tests, he has 151 dismissals in 90 innings of 134 matches.
Sangakkara topped the Test rankings the most from 2005 to 2015. The biggest achievement of his career was winning the 2014 T20 World Cup. He also became the Man of the Match in that match. The Sri Lankans reached the finals of the 2007, 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2009 and 2012 T20 World Cups with the help of Sangakkara.
Despite retiring from international cricket in 2015, the Sri Lankan superstar has played in domestic T20 leagues. He last played a friendly match in Pakistan for the Marylebone Cricket Club in 2020.
