The ‘hand washing’ project in Habiganj is being ruined due to a lack of awareness and proper maintenance. The conscious community is blaming the apathy of the concerned authorities for this.
According to the concerned sources, after the coronavirus outbreak started last year, the government took up the ‘hand washing’ project all over the country. As a part of this, 26 handwashing basins were set up at different places in Habiganj at a cost of Tk 7.80 lakh. The project is implemented by the District Public Health Engineering Department.
It has been found that due to lack of proper maintenance and water, most of the basins become unusable within 15-20 days of installation, except Habiganj Sadar Modern Hospital and a few Upazila Health Complex areas. Besides, people are not seen using these basins due to a lack of awareness.
It is alleged that many basins have been set up unplanned. Although these basins were supposed to be set up in more populated places, in many cases, it was not accepted. Not only that, the concerned authorities have not properly maintained the basins through massive publicity.
Md. Nurul Kabir Bhuiyan, an Executive Engineer of Habiganj Department of Public Health, said some basins are closed due to lack of water. However, most of them are operating outside of the town. We are trying to turn the closed basins.
About maintenance, the Executive Engineer said many basins were handed over to their respective organizations. However, the maintenance work is very difficult. Many times, the water tapes are also stolen. Still, we trying to run these, he added.
