Hailstorm damages 92 hectares of crops in Mithapukur-Pirganj

A recent hailstorm coupled with rain left different crops on vast tracts of land damaged about 92 hectares of crops in Mithapukur and Pirganj upazila of Rangpur district. Of this, 80 hectares are paddy and 12 hectares are other crops.

It has been learned that 30 hectares of boro paddy in Durgapur and Sadar union of Mithapukur upazila, five hectares of mango orchard, two hectares of maize, 50 hectares of boro paddy and five hectares of maize in Pirganj upazila have been damaged. Hundreds of farmers have suffered financial losses. It is feared that the crop production in these three unions of the two upazilas will be less this time as compared to other years.

Riaz Uddin, acting deputy director of the district agricultural extension department, said the extent of crop damage was known in the three unions of Mithapukur and Pirganj upazilas. It is thought that crops may be damaged in other unions as well.

Mostafizur Rahman, assistant meteorologist at the Rangpur Meteorological Office, said hailstorms had hit Rangpur and surrounding areas a week ago. Two millimeters of rainfall was recorded at that time. More storms are expected after the second week of April.
