Jatiya Party (JaPa) Chairman and former President Hussain Muhammad Ershad passed away (Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji'un) on Sunday morning. He was 89.

He breathed his last around 8:00 am at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.

JaPa's Joint Office Secretary MA Razzak Khan confirmed the matter to Daily Bangladesh.

Ershad, also the leader of the opposition as president of Jatiya Party, was admitted to the CMH on June 26 with various old-age complications, including low hemoglobin and liver problem, and high bilirubin and serious knee pain.

In a press briefing on Saturday, Party’s acting chairman GM Quader said Ershad’s organs had stopped functioning properly.

Since formation of the current parliament following the December 30 national election, Ershad could attend the maiden session only once due to illness.

The five-time MP flew to Singapore’s National University Hospital for medical treatment on January 20 and returned to the country on February 4. Since then he had been visiting the CMH regularly for health check-ups, said Shunil.

He was last seen at a public gathering in May when he attended an iftar mahfil arranged by his brother GM Quader at The Westin in Dhaka.
