The High Court has upheld the decision by the government that women will not be able to be marriage registrar; "it is not possible for women to perform the role of marriage registrar in terms of social and practical conditions of Bangladesh", the court suggests at the same time.

A High Court bench comprised of Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Kazi Zinat Haque rejected the writ petition of a woman registrar candidate in Dinajpur on Wednesday.

Advocate Md. Humayun Kabir, who was in the court on behalf of the writ, said the advisory committee in 2014 proposed the names of three women as the marriage registrar of ward 7,8, and 9 of the Fulbaria municipality of in Dinajpur district. Then, the three-member panel was sent to the Law Ministry.

On June 16 of that year, the Law Ministry canceled the three-member panel, stating that it is not possible for women to perform the role of marriage registrar due to the real situation in Bangladesh.

Later, the law ministry's decision was challenged in the High Court, which was filed by Aisha Siddiqua, the No 1 member in that panel.

On the writ hearing, the court issued a rule on why the letter of the Ministry of Law should not be dismissed. The High Court has laid off the writ petition was in the final hearing of the rule on Wednesday.
