HC asks Brac Bank to pay TK 15 lakh to Jahalam

The High Court today ordered instructed the authority of Brac Bank to pay Tk 15 lakh within a month to the family of innocent jute mill worker Jahalam, who was jailed for almost three years instead of the real accused in 26 corruption cases.

The virtual High Court bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan and Justice KM Kamrul Quader passed the order.

Lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan moved for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in the court hearing, Lawyer Anisul Hasan for Brac Bank, and lawyer Sheikh Zakir Hossain for Sonali Bank. Besides, Deputy Attorney General Barrister Abdullah Al Mahmoud Bashar represented the state in the court.

Earlier on Wednesday, the court set September 30 to deliver the verdict on the ruling for compensation to Jahalam. The case was put on case awaiting verdict (CAV) after the hearing on February 12, which means the judgment was reserved for any subsequent day.

In January 2019, Jahalam's misery came to light when a national daily published a report titled "Wrongfully accused in 33 cases, I'm Jahalam, not Salek." Later, Supreme Court lawyer Amit Dasgupta presented the report at court.

The High Court bench summoned the Anti-Corruption Commission officials and four others, including the plaintiff, to explain the matter. The court also issued a rule.

After the appearance of the concerned persons on February 3 of the same year, the High Court ordered the release of Jahalam and sought information from the ACC about the incident in the form of an affidavit. The ACC presented it in the form of an affidavit as per the order.
