Guthia Mosque – located at Changuria village in Guthia union of Uzirpur upazila and 17-kilometers away from Barishal district town – also known as Baitul Aman Jame Masjid and Eidgah Complex, is one of the largest mosque complex in the whole southern region including Barishal – where devout worshipers perform the five daily prayers as well as the biggest Eid congregation including Shab-e-Barat, Shab-e-Meraj.
Hundreds of Muslim pilgrims are gathering every day to see this beautiful mosque. Even tourists from home and abroad are coming to see the eye-catching mosque of Bangladesh every day.
It is learned that prominent businessman S Sarfuddin Ahmed Santu established the mosque at his own initiative on December 16, 2003, at cost of Tk 20 crore with the help of 2,10,000 construction workers.
While entering through the main gate of the mosque and Eidgah complex built on 14 acres of land, a pond will be seen on the right side. The pond, surrounded by colorful flowers and fruit trees, has been dug in such a way that the whole reflection of the mosque can be seen in the water. There is a mosaic ghat in the pond. Two fountains have been installed at the entrance of the mosque just opposite the ghat.
The center of the main mosque is located to the west of the pond. To the north end, there is a madrasa named Malika Begum Hafizia Madrasa and Orphanage – named after the founder’s mother.
There is a huge lake on three sides of the Guthia Mosque Complex which also serves as a security fence around the complex. There is a cemetery on two and a half acres of land in the east-south corner of the mosque.
There is a car parking lot and separate Wudu place and toilets for men and women in the north-east corner. There is also a helipad in the west-south corner of the mosque, but the fruit and flower gardens in the courtyard of the entire complex captivate the visitors including the worshipers.
There is a minaret about 193 feet high to the south of the main mosque with nine big and small domes. Ayatul Kursi, Surah Ar-Rahman and other verses and surahs of Al-Quran have been written in different places around the mosque building.
Apart from this, to enhance the beauty of the mosque building, design work has been done in different places with stained glass, precious marble stones, granite and ceramics. Besides, there are also light fixtures around the mosque and Eidgah complex – which enhances the beauty of the mosque at night. The round-the-clock power system has its own two generators with 150/15 KVA power along the line.
The design of the mosques imitates the designs of different mosques in different countries of the Middle East. Besides, the pillars of the mosque are made of soil from various holy places of the world and Zamzam water.
Inside the mosque, about 1500 worshipers can perform prayers together and 5000 more on the outside. There are separate prayer places for men and women. And in the Eid Jamaat, 20,000 people gather in the entire Eidgah complex.
“The mosque has made Barisal stand out to the world. As its fame spread across the country, the mosque also attracted people from outside the country,” said local resident Sardar Sohail.
The mosque is not just a sight to behold, so many ‘modern words’ have been arranged inside. A person who prays twice while standing in the congregation will want to pray here again and again.
The worshipers perform five prayers in this mosque. Besides, one of the largest Eid congregations of Barishal was held in this complex, said Md. Siddiqur Rahman, Imam Hafez of the mosque. “As the number of worshipers is increasing day by day, the presence of general people to see the artistry of the mosque and the natural beauty has also increased.”
He said there is an orphanage next to the mosque named after the mother of the founder S Sarfuddin Ahmed. There are multiple students. The cemetery inside the mosque complex has graves for the helpless and poor. Besides, the whole area has created a pleasant environment by planting various fruit and flower trees including the lake, Md. Siddiqur Rahman added.
