At least 15 people have been killed in a continued assault on Friday in western Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said in a statement.
Gunmen have attacked the area for the second time this month. In addition to the casualties, more than 300 people have been forced to flee their houses. The EHRC has said the issue as a matter of concern.
Daniel Bekele, the EHRC’s chief commissioner, said, “Civilians are being subjected to repeated attacks with unmitigated cruelty in Benishangul-Gumuz. Federal and regional authorities should take the required steps to enforce the rule of law and bring perpetrators to account.”
It is learned that the Ethiopian National Defense Force has carried out operations in the area and a shootout ensued between the gunmen and members of the Ethiopian National Defense Force. They also arrested one person who was injured.
