University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued instructions to compile a list of indigent students purchasing smartphones to facilitate online classes.
On Sunday, the UGC sent letters to the vice-chancellors of 45 public universities to compile a list of financially indigent students for the purchase of the device.
Online classes are ongoing in all public universities as physical classes closed amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Initiatives are taken to ensure the participation of all students in these classes. So, a letter has been sent to the Minister of Education from the Commission to provide free data to students with high-speed internet facility and to ensure smartphone facility under Soft Loan or Grants.
Only students who do not have the financial means to purchase the device will be given smartphones. Therefore, an accurate list has been directed to be submitted to UGC by August 25.
UGC chairman Dr. Kazi Shahidullah said that if the coronavirus period is extended, online classes will become a reality. Moreover, online classes will continue to be limited in the future. So it has become urgent to provide low-cost internet and necessary gadgets for the students.
