The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has started the process of shutting down the country's unregistered news portals. As part of this process today, 178 unregistered news portals have been shut down.

The information was given in a press release signed by Muhammad Delwar Hossain, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Monday.

The notice requested to close the links including cancellation of domain allocation of 178 unregistered and unauthorized news portals.

The closed 178 news portals list are below:

The notification also instructed not to shut the link of the online portal at number 24 in the list.

It is to be noted that the government has started the registration activities of online portals from last year to prevent mal-journalism. According to the online media policy, in order to launch a new online news portal, registration has to be taken from the government. The National Online Media Policy states that Internet-based radio, television, newspapers and other such online media published from the territory of Bangladesh will be considered as online media. The policy will contain a guideline for online media management and will require registration. The Broadcasting Commission will conduct this registration process. A fixed fee has to be paid to the commission for online media registration. However, as the Broadcasting Commission has not been formed yet, the Ministry of Information has given the responsibility to the Information Department as the authority for the registration of news portals.
