Govt seeks review on 16th amendment verdict

The prosecution has filed a petition with the Supreme Court seeking review of its judgement that scrapped the 16th amendment to the constitution which had empowered the parliament to remove its judges for incapacity and misbehavior.

The officers of the attorney general’s office submitted the 908-page review petition containing 94 grounds on which the apex court may consider the prayer on Sunday.

Earlier, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court canceled the sixteenth amendment of the constitution for the removal of the judges and gave the verdict. The full copy of the verdict given on July 3 which was published in the last week of the month. Former judge SK Sinha criticized the verdict and also gave different observations about constitutional institutions including election commission and various constitutional organizations.

Then the full verdict was released on August 1. After four months of publication of the full verdict, the prosecution has applied for the review for the verdict; the application is total 908 pages.

The attorney general earlier told that the government in the petition would pray to the apex court to restore parliament`s power to remove SC judges.
