Govt may declare 7-day general holidays

The country will put a strict lockdown for a week from April 14 due to the increase in coronavirus infections. The announcement of a general holiday may also in process for seven days. It is learned that preparations are underway for a gazette notification in this regard.

A source in the cabinet department confirmed the development on Sunday.

Sources say that the government will declare a week-long general holiday. For the time being, it is one week, but considering the situation, there are plans to extend it for another week. Work is now underway on what other restrictions will be in place, including the closure of public transport during public holidays. These issues will be clarified in the circular.

Earlier on Friday, State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain said that except for emergency services, all government and private offices and factories will remain closed during the strict lockdown starting from April 14.

He said people would not be allowed to come out of the house during the lockdown.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the government was actively considering imposing an "all-out lockdown" for one week from April 14.

He also remarked that there was no change in the indifferent mood of the people during the ongoing 'lockdown'.
