Govt extends general holidays till April 14

The government has extended the ongoing general holidays till April 13 to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country. As the Pohela Boishakh is the next day, the holiday will be extended until April 14.

It was said in a notification signed by Sheikh Yusuf Harun, secretary of the public administration ministry on Sunday. 

According to the notification, with previously declared holidays from March 26 to April 4, which was extended until April 11 afterwards. Now the general holiday extends for the 3rd time until April 14.

As per the latest circular of public administration ministry, utility services such as water, electricity, gas, telephone and internet will remain operational during the shutdown. Agriculture products, fertiliser, insecticides, media, foods, goods, medical equipment, daily essentials, kitchen markets, restaurants, drug stores and hospitals would also remain out of the purview of the shutdown, the circular added. The circular also reads that offices can be opened for urgent necessities. Pharmaceuticals and export-oriented mills and factories will remain open if necessary.

Considering the needs of the people, Bangladesh Bank will also provide necessary instructions for keeping the banking system limited during the holidays.

The third phase of the holiday was extended. Earlier, the government declared a holiday from March 25 to April 1. It was later extended to 3 April.
