Govt decides to form three new upazilas

The government has decided to form three new upazilas. These are – Dasar in Madaripur, Eidgaon in Cox’s Bazar and Shantiganj in Sunamganj.
State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain told reporters after a regular Cabinet meeting on Monday afternoon.
He added that the decision was taken at a meeting of the National Implementation Committee on Administrative Restructuring. The name of an upazila will be changed with the addition of three new upazilas, one city corporation, the boundaries of two municipalities will be expanded.
Meanwhile, Local Government Division sources said a new upazila named Eidgaon will be formed in Cox’s Bazar district. Madhynagar thana in Dharmapasha upazila of Sunamganj district will be upgraded to Shantiganj upazila and Dasar thana in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur district will be upgraded to upazila.
South Sunamganj upazila of Sunamganj district is being renamed as Shantiganj. The boundaries of the Shibchar municipality of Madaripur district are being expanded. The boundaries of Dohar municipality in Dhaka district are being expanded and shrunk at the same time. Besides, the boundaries of Sylhet City Corporation are being expanded.
Upazila is an important unit in the administrative system of Bangladesh. An upazila is formed by a few unions and a district with a few upazilas. Currently, there are a total of 492 upazilas in 64 districts in 8 divisions of Bangladesh. With these three upazilas, the total number of upazilas in the country will be 495.
