In Puthia of Rajshahi, farmers are passing the busy time with jute cutting, jute rotting, peel off fiber and drying. This year golden fiber’s price has been increased that leads smiles on farmers’ faces.

According to the Upazila Agriculture Office, about three times more jute than expectation has been cultivated in Puthia. 11 thousand and 60 metric tons jute have been cultivated in 31thousand and 60 hectares of land.

Local sources said, the Jute farmers are thinking their good days are coming back amid the improved jute cultivation in favorable weather conditions. Price has been risen according to demand too. The raw jute is being sold at Tk1700-2000 per mound, the sources also informed.

Jute trader Shafiqul Islam said, "It has been getting good prices in jute since last year. Jute is coming up in different bazaars including Baneshwar”. Buyers are coming from different parts of the country. Local jute mill owners are also buying. We are getting good prices too. The price would have gone higher if there is no syndicate, he also said.

Because of getting good prices last year, Jute farmer Abul Fazal said, “I have cultivated jute in two bighas of land this year. It cost Tk 10,000 per bigha. Hopefully, jute price will go up more at the end.”

Regarding the issue, Upazila Agriculture Officer Manzure Mawla said that jute cultivation has been good this year due to favorable weather. Attacks of diseases-insects were also minimal. Because of better quality, Buyers are buying jute at a higher price.” Puthia jute cultivators are back in their good days, he also remarked.
