Globe Biotech Limited, a subsidiary of domestic pharmaceutical company Globe Pharmaceuticals Group of Companies, has expressed hope that if all goes well, the coronavirus vaccine will come in the country’s market by the end of this year.

Dr. Asif Mahmud, head of the research and development department of the company, told Daily Bangladesh.

Asked about the progress of the coronavirus vaccine, he said, “We are still in the animal trial. The trial will end in September. If all goes well, we are trying to bring the vaccine to the country’s market by the end of this year, i.e. by December.”

At the end of the animal trial, an application will be made for a human trial. The vaccine will come to the market after completing three stages of the human trial, said Dr. Asif Mahmud.

Asked if there were any obstacles or problems in the vaccine process, he said, “We don’t have any obstacles. We are getting tremendous encouragement and cooperation from everywhere.”

Since we are still working on our own, we don't have to go to any regulatory body, Asif said, adding, “Hopefully, we will get that cooperation later.”

He said there is only one obstacle and that is we need re-agents. Buying a re-agent is a matter of time. No one in Bangladesh has the re-agents we require. It is a matter of time to bring those things from abroad and take them out of customs. We are having a little problem with these things. But these are conventional.

There is some analysis after applying the vaccine for the animal trial – which requires some re-agents for the time being, said Dr. Asif Mahmud, hoping that all the things that require will come soon.

Asked how safe and effective the vaccine for animal trials, he said two things must be confirmed in animal trials before human trials. After completing this animal trial, we will go to the next step as per the rules. The vaccine has to be developed in such a way that it can be given directly to the human body. For these reasons, it takes a little more time, added Dr. Asif Mahmud.

All countries in the world are trying to invent a vaccine. Russia has already announced. Besides, several countries gave the announcement soon. However, I do not know that anyone is working on the vaccine in Bangladesh. So if anyone in the country can, then we can. I think if anyone can, Globe Biotech Limited can do it in Bangladesh, he also said.

It is worth to be mentioned that the company announced the discovery of the first vaccine in the country on July 2. On the same day, they informed that the trial on animals is going on at the research center of the institute at Rupganj in Narayanganj and the rest of the work is going on in their lab.

They started inventing the vaccine on March 8 and after completing all the stages, it may take another 6 to 8 months to reach the domestic market. According to him, the coronavirus vaccine made by Globe will be available in the country’s market by the end of this year.
