Gazipur councilor among 25 sued for extortion

An extortion case has been filed against 25 people including a councilor and a local Awami League leader.

KC factory manager Md. Imtiaz filed the extortion case with Kashimpur police station on Wednesday afternoon.

Kashimpur police SI Dipankar Roy said ward 2 councillor Montaj Uddin Mandal, ward 2 AL president Abdul Halim and general secretary Md Shahidullah, AL leaders Abdul Gani and Abul Quashem are among 25 made accused in the case filed for demanding Tk 5 lakh as toll.

KC factory managing director Farooq Ahmed said that the accused have been demanding toll from the factory's MD M Farooque Ahmed for two years. Despite trying to resolve the issue socially, the councilor and his men continued to make regular threats. Last few days ago, on the occasion of Eid, the councilor and his people demanded Tk 5 lakh. At one stage he beat the workers and officials in the factory for refusing to pay. Failure to pay the dues threatens to cause even greater damage to the factory.

Factory workers blocked the Dhaka EPZ road on May 3 and 4 in protest of the beating. He has sued in the interest of the safety of the factory and its workers.

Councilor Montaz Uddin Mandal denied the allegations of extortion and claimed that the case was filed to demean them socially.

Kashimpur Police Station OC Mahbub A Khoda said the case would continue through a proper investigation. The operation to arrest the other accused is continuing.
