Gatco corruption case: Oct 13 fixed to frame charges

The court has fixed October 13 for the hearing of charges against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and other accused in the Gatco corruption case.

The case was scheduled to be heard on Wednesday. However, Khaleda Zia could not appear in court as she was ill. His lawyer Zia Uddin Zia appealed for time. Acting Judge Nazrul Islam of Dhaka's Special Court No. 3 adjourned the hearing of the case.

On September 2, 2007, Deputy Director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Golam Shahriar Chowdhury filed a case against the then Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, her youngest son Arafat Rahman Koko and 13 others with the Tejgaon police station. Khaleda Zia and Koko were arrested the day after the case.

The case was included in the Emergency Powers Act on September 16 of that year. Chargesheets were filed against 24 people, including Khaleda Zia, on May 13 the following year.

According to the chargesheet, the accused conspired with GATCO to handle container handling work at Kamalapur ICD in Dhaka and Chittagong port and caused a loss of Tk 14.56 crore to the state.

Six of the 24 accused in the case have already died. They are: former minister M Saifur Rahman, Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, MK Anwar, former Jamaat-e-Islami chief Matiur Rahman Nizami, Chittagong Port chief finance and accounting officer Ahmed Abul Kashem and BNP chairperson's younger son Arafat Rahman Koko.

The other accused are- former BNP minister M Shamsul Islam, former state minister for energy AKM Mosharraf Hossain, former minister Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, former chairman of Chittagong Port Authority (CBA) Commodore Zulfiqar Ali, Jahanara Akbar, wife of late minister Colonel (retd) Akbar Hossain, their two sons Ismail Hossain Simon and AKM Musa Kajal, Ehsan Yusuf, former naval secretary Zulfiqar Haider Chowdhury. , AK Rashid Uddin Ahmed, former member of Chittagong Port Authority (CBAC), Shahjahan M Hasib, director of Global Agrotrade Pvt Ltd (GATCO), Syed Tanvir Ahmed and Syed Ghalib Ahmed, directors of GATCO, ASM Shahadat Hossain, former chairman of Chittagong Port Authority, former port Director (Transport) AM Sanwar Hossain and former member of the port Lutful Kabir.
