Gang-raping woman on running bus: One pleads guilty, 5 on remand

A court in Dhaka today has granted a three-day remand to five accused arrested in a case of gang-rapping a woman on a running bus in Savar's Ashulia area.
Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court passed the order on Saturday. At the same time, another accused in the case, Sumon, pleaded guilty.
The information was obtained from the general registration branch of Ashulia police station.
The accused who were taken to remand are - Md. Aryan, Saju, Sohag, Monwar and Saiful Islam.
They all used to run minibusses on the Abdullahpur-Bypail-Nabinagar highway and lived in rented houses in the Kamarpara area under Turag police station.
On the day, the six accused were produced before the Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court on Saturday. At that time, the accused Sumon and Monwar voluntarily agreed to give confessional statements. The investigating officer of the case then appealed for recording the confessional statements of the two accused under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
At the same time, the investigating officer of the case appealed to remand the other four accused to five days for proper investigation.
According to the case statement, the victim bought a mobile phone for her sister and went to her home in Manikganj on May 28. While returning from her sister's house, she got on the bus of New Bangla Paribahan at Nabinagar to go to Tongi Station Road. But the driver changed the direction of the bus when it reached the Ashulia bridge area.
The victim said she was gang-raped on the bus by the six men, including the bus driver and his associate.
