Gang rape in MC College: Chargesheet submitted

Police have filed a chargesheet against eight accused in a gang-rape case at the MC College dormitory in Sylhet.
Indraneel Bhattacharya, the investigating officer in the case, handed over the chargesheet in the court of Sylhet Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Judge Abul Kashem on Thursday morning.
Of the eight accused arrested in the chargesheet, six were charged with direct rape and two with aiding and abetting.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Deputy Commissioner BM Ashraf Ullah Taher confirmed the information.
It is to be noted that a housewife was gang-raped by miscreants at the dormitory of Sylhet MC College on 25 September at around 7:30 pm. A case has been filed against 6 people in this incident at SMP’s Shahparan police station. The victim’s husband filed the case as a plaintiff.
The accused in the case are – Tarekul Islam Tareq, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Rony, Arjun Laskar, Rabiul Islam, and Mahfuzur Rahman Masum. Besides, three more unidentified persons were also accused.
In the context of the case, 8 people detained in the RAB and district police raid are currently in jail. The police remanded the detainees for 5 days. When they were produced before the court after the remand, they all made confessional statements.
On the other hand, A report has been submitted to the High Court bench comprising Justice Md. Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Mohiuddin Shamim after the judicial investigation into the incident of gang rape.
According to a source close to the investigation, a public hearing was held in the hall of the District and Sessions Judge’s Court in Sylhet from 4 October to 7 October. Later, the committee members visited the MC College dormitory on the spot. A 176-page investigation report was submitted to the High Court bench on 16 October after recording the statements of the witnesses including the inspection of the spot. The hearing was held on 20 October. The High Court bench accepted the report after the hearing.
Meanwhile, after the incident of gang-rape, an investigation committee was formed by the college authorities on 26 October. Although the investigation committee submitted the report later, the principal of the college sealed the report of the college committee on the pretext of judicial inquiry.
Moreover, the National University has canceled the scholarships and certificates of four accused involved in the gang-rape of the housewife. They have also been permanently expelled from MC College. The expelled are – Saifur Rahman, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Rony, Mahfuzur Rahman Masum and Rabiul Hasan.
The DNA samples of 8 people detainees in the case were collected on 1 October and 3 October. After collecting samples at MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet, the DNA samples were sent to Dhaka Lab. Then on 29 November, the results of the DNA report came and found the involvement of the accused.
