Grameenphone bought a 10.4 MHz radio spectrum in the last block of the 2,100 MHz band per 5 MHz at $46.75 million by auction on Monday.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) sold 27.4 MHz spectrum to mobile operators for Tk 7,634 crore through auction.
The auction started at 11:00 am at a hotel in the capital on Monday and ended at 8:30 pm. Grameenphone and Robi, two of the country’s top mobile operators, fought a fierce battle over the spectrum auction. Although Grameenphone has won the auction, they have to pay a record price for this.
On the other hand, Robi Axiata bought 7.6 MHz and Banglalink bought 9.4 MHz. However, the government operator Teletalk could not buy any spectrum.
Post and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabbar, Posts and Telecommunications Secretary Afzal Hossain, BTRC Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder along with senior BTRC officials, senior officials of mobile operators and invited dignitaries were present on the occasion.
