After the formulation of government policy, free rapid antigen testing for coronavirus or COVID-19 has been started in 10 districts.
The free antigen testing will be expanded in phases although it was started in 10 districts of the country from Saturday, according to the relevant sources.
The districts where antigen testing has started – Panchagarh, Gaibandha, Meherpur, Munshiganj, Brahmanbaria, Joypurhat, Patuakhali, Jashore, Madaripur and Sylhet. The test can be done at Shaheed Shamsuddin Medical College Hospital in Sylhet and sadar hospitals in the rest of the district.
Earlier, the DGHS’s instructions were sent to the 10 districts on Wednesday. After training the concerned persons of the directorate, they were sent to their respective districts along with antigen kits.
Antigen testing is the fastest way to diagnose COVID-19 infection. For this, samples have to be taken from inside the nose or mouth. In this method, the results will be known in just half an hour.
However, the RT PCR method is the most reliable in detecting COVID infections. However, it takes a long time to get results after collecting samples, and it is also expensive. Besides, there are no labs required for this test in all parts of the country. The cost of antigen testing is lower than that, the results are also available faster.
It is to be mentioned that the government approved the antigen testing on 16 September. Initially, 500 kits have been provided in each district where antigen testing will be done. The DGHS will gradually introduce the testing in other districts as well.
