The number of coronavirus infections in France jumped over one million on Friday, making the country seventh globally as well as second in Europe to reach that milestone.
According to the French health care agency over the past 24 hours the country registered a record 42,032 new cases, taking the total to 1,041,075.
France also registered 298 new deaths on Friday, taking the total to 34,508.
France takes place at seventh in the context of most infected country in the world while the United States tops in the list followed by India, Brazil, Russia, Spain and Argentina.
French president Emmanuel Macron said he had no choice but to extend a curfew to more than two-thirds of the population.
"In the phase we are in, we have no other choice, given the number of infections per day, than to reduce our social life as much as possible... if we really want to preserve our health system and our fellow citizens," the president explained after a meeting with the teams of the René-Dubos hospital in Pontoise, Val-d'Oise.
