The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) said on its website on Monday that four variants of Corona have been identified in the country so far.

According to IEDCR, four variants were detected by sequencing the genomes of samples of 200 Covid-19 patients. The variants include B1.1.7 (UK variant), B1.351 (South Africa variant), B1.525 (Nigeria variant), and B1.617.2 (India variant).

The report was recently published jointly by IEDCR, International Center for Diarrhea Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) and the Institute for Developing Science and Health Initiatives (IEDESI).

It said that in April, samples of 26 potential Covid-19 patients from India were tested and the Indian type was identified in six samples. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared this type as a Variant of Concern (VOC). This Indian variant has been identified in 44 countries of the world.

The six patients were reportedly traveling to Chennai, Bangalore, Haryana and West Bengal in India for treatment. They are members of the same family and ages between 7 to 75.

The IEDCR says Indian-type sequences have already been submitted to the global database GISAID.
