The incident occurred during a match in the city of Mobile between Vigor and Williamson on Saturday (AEDT).

In the closing stages of the game, gunfire erupted from the west side of Ladd-Peebles Stadium at 9.56pm on Friday (local time), causing players and spectators to run for cover, according to local witnesses.

Four people — three males and one female — were injured in the shooting and one of the victims has been taken to hospital in a critical condition.

A statement from the local Mobile police department said: “Multiple injuries have been reported, and those victims have been transported to the hospital.”

One individual has been transferred to the hospital with a life-threatening injury.”

The shooter has not yet been identified and any potential motive is currently unknown.

The Ladd-Peebles Stadium was also the scene of a mass shooting in 2019 when nine people were shot at during a game between Williamson and Leflore.

On that occasion a 17-year-old turned himself in and was charged with attempted murder.

In light of this latest shooting, Mobile police chief Paul Prine condemned the acts of violence.

“This type of gun violence is not going to be tolerated, and as the new chief, we will be very serious about it,” he told local news channel WHNT.

“If you’re involved in this in any way, you need to turn yourself in.”
