Former JU pro-VC Professor Afsar Ahmed dies

Department of Drama & Dramatics Professor and former Pro Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (Administration) Professor Afsar Ahmed died from heart attack. He was 62.

He died at the National Heart Hospital around 2pm on Saturday.

JU teacher Yusuf Hasan Ork said he had a heart attack on the plane on his way back to Dhaka from Khulna. After bringing him to the National Heart Hospital in Dhaka, on duty doctor declared him dead. 

Department of Drama & Dramatics Chairman Professor Soma Mumtaz said Professor Afsar Ahmed has left us. After a while, his body will reach the university. His Namaz-e-Janaza will be held at the university campus after the Esha prayers.

Soma Mumtaz said Afsar Ahmed Sir went to Khulna to take part in a marriage ceremony of a former student. After the ceremony, he was flying off to Dhaka from Jashore Airport this (Saturday) morning. After landing at the airport, he had heart problems. From there, Professor Afsar Ahmed was taken directly to the National Heart Institute for treatment. 

She added that he was kept in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) of the National Heart Institute for treatment. But at 2.30 pm he died without saying goodbye to everyone.

Professor Afsar Ahmed was born on 30 September 1959 in Uttar Jamsha village of Singair upazila of Manikganj district. He obtained first-class first place in both undergraduate and postgraduate examinations from the Department of Bengali Language and Literature.

He obtained his PhD degree from Jahangirnagar University in the light of medieval Bengali narrative poetry entitled Ethnic Drama of Bangladesh.

Afsar Ahmad started his teaching career as a lecturer in the Bangla Department of Jahangirnagar University. Later, one of the best playwrights of the post-Rabindranath period. Along with Selim Al Deen, he established the first full-fledged Drama & Dramatics department of Bangladesh at Jahangirnagar University in the 1986-87 academic year.

Since its inception, he has been teaching in the Department of Drama & Dramatics, serving as President of the Department, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Proctor, and elected member of the Senate-Syndicate.

In 2013, Professor Afsar Ahmed took over as the Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of Jahangirnagar University. He is simultaneously a poet, playwright, translator, researcher and literary critic.
