Former Habiganj councillor killed by police gunfire

A former ward councilor has been killed in police gunfire at Magurunda village of Chunarughat upazila in Habiganj early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Yunus Miah, 40, former word councilor of ward-9 in Chunarughat municipality.

Police claimed, he had long been involved with involved in drug trfficing.

Officer-in-charge of Chunarughat Police Station Azmiruzzaman said, on secret information that a gang of drug traders was trading Yaba, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 12 pm.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the drug traders attacked on them with sharp weapons, forcing them to retaliate that triggered the shootout, OC added.

After the gunbattle, police recovered Yunus`s bullet-hit body. Later, the injured was took to Chunarughat Health Complex and doctors declared him dead.

A police member was also injured in the gunfight, said the police personnel.
